    Author Notes:

Back from my Summer hols-! I had a lot of fun with this page, it was nice to take a break from all that purple ;D

I had so many weird medical anthropology examples and culturally specific illnesses I nearly used here, but the dancing plague is just so bizarre that it had to win out in the end.

My guess is that it was not "dancing" at all, but rather a disease that effected motor skills. Basically, it wrecked your brain in such a way that you would move around constantly in these jerks and such which made it look like you were dancing, but really weren't.

That's definitely a possibility! It's a weird thought that there might be some kind of disease out there which has disappeared.

The more I read about it, though, the more I started to think it was a kind of mass hysteria. The written accounts definitely suggest that they were dancing in a coordinated way, and that it wasn't a case of lots of people independently getting these symptoms at different times and places but of people seeing this giant frenzied dance party and finding themselves joining in, and getting frenzied to the point where they couldn't stop.

The authorities probably didn't help by deciding that the best way to handle the situation was to provide musicians and clear space for the dancing to continue...

    The Doodler
I love how much this comic shows the research. :D

(Now I'm "hoping" her meds are for something mental, which I admit is kinda horrible to hope, but they're less likely to kill you immediately and directly than some physical ailements.)

Even though what happened was really probably pretty sad, these people sure do have some moves, especially the lady on the right.
